Nest Pretty Things

vintage handmade jewelry

Let’s start the week off with a little vendor love, shall we?

Although this little shop has been around for a while now, I’ve only recently discovered Nest Pretty Things and I’m so glad I did! I’m completely smitten by the vintage-inspired lovelies created by Tamar, a former Creative Director and Stylist who now devotes her time to jewelry design. I love that her pieces have a vintage feel but still manage to look fresh and modern. Her colorful flower necklaces (above) would be perfect accessories for bridesmaids, don’t you think?

…and these headbands would be absolutely darling on a bride:

I wanted to learn a little more about Tamar and her pretty things so we recently had a little chat:

Q: What made you decide to switch careers from Stylist/Creative Director to jewelry designer?
A: 5 years ago we moved to Vermont looking to leave the big city life behind us and change gears, both my husband and I really needed a  change and we both loved the idea of living in a small New England town, being close to nature, gardening and growing our own veggies, and enjoying a much quieter life. Vermont is such a special place, we’ve been loving it! Once we got here I knew I needed to start my own business, I started doing interior decorating but the market was too small and I ended up crafting while waiting around for clients… slowly I got into it more and more, using my long career as a Creative Director and Photo Stylist to enhance my business.

Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Feminine, colorful, eclectic, romantic – it’s hard to say. I think I have  a few styles going on that I fuse together. Having 3 boys, I crave for everything girly….

Q: What inspires you most?
A: Textiles (especially vintage and ethnic), art, interiors, movies, nature, and I love flowers… every week during the summer I make giant bouquets of flowers from my garden and they can inspire a whole collection.

Q: Do you ever create custom pieces?
A: I have a few customers that love my work and have great taste, if they want to make some changes to a piece and I like the idea I am happy to oblige, but I need to love it.

Enjoy Cupcakes

March 9, 2010

California baker - Enjoy Cupcakes

I’m sure by now many of you have already discovered Enjoy Cupcakes since they’ve been featured on several blogs lately. Nonetheless, I couldn’t help but give them a little vendor love here on Flights of Fancy as well. If this is your first time hearing about this cute cupcakery, you’re in for a treat!

Owned by husband and wife team Amber and Kevin Vander Vliet, this sweet and stylish California-based bakery offers gourmet cupcakes in just about every flavor imaginable. Given their location (wine country), it makes sense that their signature cupcake is Chocolate Blackberry Syrah which is filled with dark chocolate Belgium fudge and topped with blackberry frosting and a syrah-soaked blackberry.

If you prefer your cupcakes without wine, there are also several chocolate-based flavors to choose from like Triple Chocolate Mousse, Subtle Spicy Chocolate and Smores or you can indulge in vanilla-based flavors like Coconut Key Lime, Caramel Crème Brulée or Strawberry Lemonade (yum!). If there’s a special flavor have in mind, Amber can whip that up too!

Cupcake (and wine) connoisseurs can visit Amber at the Saarloos & Sons tasting lounge in Los Olivos on weekends – a stylish space with elegant, vintage-inspired details (shown above)…but what I’m most in love with is their cupcake trailer:

Enjoy Cupcakes - cupcake trailer

Enjoy Cupcakes can bring the bakery to your event and serve their delicious treats out of an adorable vintage Shasta trailer! How cute is that?!?

I recently had a lovely chat with Amber and had the opportunity to ask her a couple questions about her business:

Q: I just love the cupcake trailer! How did that idea come about?
A: I was reading designsponge.com and came across a post about a girl in Kansas who was selling gourmet sno cones out of a vintage trailer and it completely inspired me.

Q: As a baker you could have chosen a number of specialties… why cupcakes?
A: I find cupcakes to be extremely versatile.  People often ask, “do you only make cupcakes?” and my response is, “no, I make creme brulee, caramels, puddings, fresh fruit curds, baklava, chocolate mousse, toffee, fudge, cheesecake, and more – all for the cupcakes!”

Q: What’s your favorite flavor?
A: I honestly don’t have one!  I guess it depends on my mood  :)   I can tell you that our most popular flavor is the Chocolate Blackberry Syrah and I’m a sucker for PB & Chocolate together.

Q: For those of us who are completely bummed that we don’t live in California, any chance that your cute trailer would travel to other states?
A: Unfortunately, no.  Serving cupcakes out of the trailer is a pretty small part of our overall business. We have a store front (and are opening a second one on March 11) so that keeps us pretty tied down and close to home.  We do overnight ship our cupcakes though!

Thanks so much Amber for chatting with us!

If you’re fortunate enough to live in California, you can visit Enjoy Cupcakes at 2971 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos on Thursdays – Sundays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm… or give them a call at 805-451-0284.

A New Nest for Paloma’s Nest

February 16, 2010

I’m sure many of you are familiar with Paloma’s Nest by now. The work of Caroline Colom Vasquez have been featured all over the blogosphere and in several magazines, including Martha Stewart Weddings. It’s not surprising that these beautiful bowls have become so popular – in an age of mass production and over-the-top-everything, there’s something quite appealing about the hand-crafted simplicity of these ‘modern heirlooms’.

Caroline says that she is “dedicated to creating pieces for the home and for the heart” and believes that by adding text, “we give written ideas, feelings, and daydreams a place to rest“. This passion, care and dedication can be seen in every piece she creates.

We’re so excited that Paloma’s Nest has launched a brand new website this week! As expected, it’s just beautiful. Along with the new site, Caroline has also introduced her new (and absolutely exquisite) Heirloom Packaging… another testament to the care and quality that goes into the Paloma’s Nest products.

A huge congratulations to Caroline for the beautiful new website and for the continued success of Paloma’s Nest! Be sure to visit the shop for your own modern heirloom and enjoy free shipping until March 1.
